Don’t judge a woman by her cover. But after sitting down with Lydia Hu (pronounced “who”), we realize she is just as her smile and cobalt blue sheath dress would suggest: warm, intelligent and downright electric. It’s no wonder she captured the crown at the third Miss Sinergy pageant this Fall.
While some pageant careers are winding down at 25, Lydia was just getting started. By then, she had gained experience in communications and public speaking as well as pursued an exciting career as a litigation attorney. Armed with a deep understanding of herself and the reasons why she was competing, she entered her first pageant. In October of 2009, she placed first runner up to Miss Maryland USA 2010.
Lydia went on to offer us a glimpse of the person she was 10 years ago—a member of both her high school’s student government and newspaper. She quickly remembers also being voted most stylish. No surprise there as I envy the fashionable gold hardware on her dress.
We get to chatting about what makes the Miss Sinergy pageant unique:
- The pageant supports the Libby Ross Foundation and Becky’s Fund, organizations dedicated to breast cancer and domestic violence survivors, respectively.
- There is no entry fee. I repeat, NO ENTRY FREE.
- Only 20 contestants make it to the live competition after a period of online voting.
- Interviews are conducted on stage
